The saying goes, “How you do anything is how you do everything.” It’s true. How you act today plants the seed for how you act tomorrow. If you act in an inauthentic manner today, you are strengthening the habit to be inauthentic tomorrow. How you do anything is how you do everything. Stand with virtue now, stand with virtue later. Act courageous now, act courageous later. If you want to be a kinder person, be kind in the present.

This is a great reminder to focus on the present. Focus on your actions today. It is easy to remember past actions or think about future actions, but it is hard to focus on the task at hand, over and over. This, though, is what builds the habit for future actions.

If you want to perform better, whether be in sports or business, practice harder (and smarter) now. My wrestling coach used to tell me, “How you practice now is how you’ll wrestle in the next match. If you quit now, you’ll quit then.” This was usually said near the end of hours long conditioning drills. What he was essentially telling me was how I act now is how I am going to act later.

The same goes for how you show up with your team. If you want more structured meetings, structure this meeting. If you want to be a better leader, be a better leader now.

How you handle any challenge or adversity is also probably how you handle all of them. There is a story about a top executive at a company that would take new candidates out to lunch before hiring them. He would pay the restaurant to purposely mess up the candidate’s meal. He wanted to see first hand how the candidate would handle this situation. Would he be kind and patient? Would he let the incident ruin his day? This executive knew the power of this saying. How this candidate handled the small matter of a messed up lunch order gave insight into how the candidate would handle future adversity in the executive’s company. How you do anything is how you do everything.

How you do anything is how you do everything. Live it, now.
